Media General collected three prizes at the Ghana Journalists Association's 30th Media Awards, held in Accra on Saturday night, according to 3News. The group's television and online platforms featured across the winners' list, with honours in documentary, education reporting and road safety.
The ceremony recognised journalism published during 2025, and President John Dramani Mahama delivered the keynote address. Media General entered the evening with eight nominations — more than any other organisation on a 53-name shortlist.
Why it matters
The GJA awards remain the country's most visible annual measure of journalistic work, and a strong showing carries weight for both newsroom morale and public reputation. For Media General, the result extends a run of recognition that includes wins at regional level this season, among them Ibrahim Abubakari Wangara's two prizes at the Upper West GJA awards and success at the Ashanti GJA Media Excellence Awards.
The night also underlined how broad the awards have become. Beyond the eleven beat categories, there are special campaign awards sponsored by outside organisations, and a separate scheme announced by the Bank of Ghana is intended to encourage stronger coverage of economic and financial affairs.
A drug investigation takes the documentary prize
The documentary "Hooked on Red", made by Godwin Asediba for TV3, was named Best in Television Documentary. It examined the continued sale and misuse of a banned opioid known as "Red", which 3News reports is still easy to obtain in communities around Ghana.
Asediba was the sole nominee in the category. The awards committee's citation said the film "confronts the disturbing reality of drug addiction and its far-reaching impact on individuals and society", according to 3News.
Asediba has since left Media General and now works for the BBC. During his time at TV3 he was named the GJA/PAV Ansah Journalist of the Year for 2024 at the previous year's ceremony.
Education and road safety wins
Stanley Nii Blewu, a reporter with 3News, won the education reporting award, one of the eleven beat categories. He had previously been among four Media General journalists recognised at the 28th GJA Awards.
Christian Yalley of TV3 took the Road Safety award, part of the special campaign categories presented on the night by KGL Group. Yalley was also shortlisted in the television features category, which went to Daniel Mantey of Pent TV.
Other Media General nominees were Portia Gabor, Akua Oforiwaa Darko, Bill Eshun and Eric Mensah-Ayettey. Oforiwaa Darko was shortlisted for Best in Television News, won by freelance journalist Nabil Ahmed Rufai, while Eshun was shortlisted for the sports award, which went to Nathaniel Attoh of Joy FM.
Philip Osei Bonsu of Asempa FM was named Journalist of the Year. Former President John Kufuor was among those honoured on the night, according to DailyGuide Network.
Watch for how the Bank of Ghana's new economic and financial journalism award scheme shapes next year's entries, and whether Media General's regional momentum carries into the 31st edition.
